We were talking on the occasion of the album release with Klaus Schill (Synths, Guitars, Production) and Frank Zwicker (Vocals + Words).
You sweat fairly in the studio and in a few days you bring us your new album „UNBROKEN“. This album marked a single: „CONTAMINATION“. What can be said for a single?
Yes indeed, CONTAMINATION is the first Single we have released in March. We chose it because it has that certain Sea of Sin trademark sound: Electronic Pop Music with strong melodies and a certain melancholy and deep atmosphere. It combines an 80s Synth Pop vibe with energetic Vocals and a strong hookline that sticks in the head. Though we have a lot more potential Singles on the Album UNBROKEN – so in the end it is was a close decision and you have to trust your intuition and gut feeling. It is the same when it comes to the tracklisting and the order of the Songs on an Album – dramaturgy and flow have to work out in the end.
Does the album have any central idea or motto?
Firstly UNBROKEN is kind of a reference to the life motto to never give up – failure is part of everyday life, we all have suffered from defeats in a lot of aspects, in the end it is most important and vital to get up again and try to move on. Concerning the Song texts and Words of the Songs on UNBROKEN, the main topic is Love and interpersonal relationships – as a central aspect in all our lifes that drives so many emotions, moods and actions.
What was the hardest thing about the album?
Actually it was anything but hard to produce this album. We never had such a productive phase in our band history as in Autumn/Winter last year. We have come up with so many Song ideas so fast – that’s also the reason why we were able to release UNBROKEN only 12 monts after our last Album FUTURE PULSE. You can never force creativity – but on the other hand you have to use and exploit a positive momentum when it is there. The only real challenge was that we both live in different cities quite far from each other, in Hamburg and Stuttgart. But thanks to advanced technology and fast internet it is no problem to interact via www. And sure, we both have our every day jobs that keep us busy, so quite a lot of nightshifts
The final Vocal recordings then happened in Stuttgart in January were we booked time in a Studio to record Vocals and Guitars upon the Instrumetal Pre-Productions. To have that certain Band spirit during final recordings.
Is there a different sound from your previous creation?
As mentioned above we think that we have developped kind of an own Sea of Sin Sound/DNA. We blend electronic Sounds (Synths, Samples) with an atmospheric and almost organic mood, including Guitars and Piano in some Songs, all bind together with strong melodies and Franks unique Voice. We have used the expression „bittersweet“ in the Song YOU and the instrumental Reprise at the end of the Album – this expression very well sums up the mood of the Album. We tend to wrtite melancholic Songs, but they usually also carry some hope and positive spirit – that’s why we think that genre titles „Indie Pop“ / „Synth Pop“ best describe our Music. Because we always focus on the Song itself and melodies rather than very onnovative production techniques or Effects. We feel closer to Bands like Editors or New Order than to rather Dancefloor oriented Synth / Futurepop Bands.
How do you think the new album will stand in the rest of the music space?
As described we always focus on the Song first. We sometimes get confronted with criticism that we do not sound innovative or sound the way we used to years ago. Yes that’s true – and we are rather proud of that. Because we still have a lot of creative potential in us to write strong Indie / Synth Pop songs. If that isn’t top trendy it is OK for us. Because we don’t want to change our Musical DNA due to external feedback. In the end an artist has to believe in himself – and we firtly want to make music that we love. And that is absolutely true with UNBROKEN, we are totally happy with the outcome. We think it is the best work we have accomplished so far in our long band history since the 1990s. Songs like You, Love won’t wait, Unspoken Words, Floating away or Naked, to only name some, are defenitely kind of the best Songs we have written so far.

Will you support the album concerts?
That is still a big dream of ours – to play live again after such a long break. We played our last concerts almost 20 years ago!! So we need time for preparation etc. And most importantly we have to grow and re-vitalize our fanbase. So it would defenitely make sense to play some shows as support act for bigger acts. Let’s see how things work out the next couple of months. Our second Single will be YOU which will be released in Mid June. Including several Remixes of other artists and producers. We are also planning to shoot a Music Video for this Song and we will run a Radio promotion – keep fingers crossed that 2019 will be our year!! Ve studiu jste se dost zapotili a přinesli jste nové album „UNBROKEN“. Toto album odstartoval singl: „CONTAMINATION“. Co lze o něm říci?
Ano, CONTAMINATION je první singl, který jsme vydali v březnu. Vybrali jsme si ho, protože má typický zvuk značky Sea of Sin. Skladbě dominuje silná melodie s jistou melancholií a hlubokou atmosférou. Kombinuje vibraci 80. let Synthy Popu s energickými vokály a silnou linií, která hraje v hlavě. Ačkoliv máme na albu UNBROKEN mnohem více potenciálních singlů, tak to nakonec rozhodla naše intuice pro tuto skladbu jaku úvodní singl.
Má album nějakou ústřední myšlenku, nebo nějaké motto?
Za prvé UNBROKEN je odkaz na životní motto, které sděluje, že bychom se nikdy neměli vzdávat. Neúspěch je součástí každodenního života, všichni jsme trpěli porážkami a to v mnoha aspektech, nakonec nejdůležitější je vstát a zkoušet to dál. Pokud jde o texty písní na UNBROKEN, hlavním tématem je láska a mezilidské vztahy – což je ústřední aspekt našich životů, který nás žene k emocím, náladám a jednání.
Co bylo na albu nejtěžší?
Vlastně to bylo úplně něco jiného udělat toto album. V historii naší kapely jsme nikdy nebyli tak úspěšní jako v loňském podzimním a zimním období. Bylo to období kdy nás se nám rýsovalo spoustu nápadů – to je také důvod, proč jsme mohli po posledním albu FUTURE PULSE vydat UNBROKEN pouze po 12-ti měsících. Nikdy se ke kreativitě nemůžete nutit, ale na druhé straně pokud je nápad, tak ho musíte využít. Velkou výzvou byla práce ve velmi vzdálených studií od sebe a to v Hamburku a Stuttgartu. Ale díky pokročilé technologii a rychlému internetu není problém komunikovat přes web. Oba máme svou běžnou práci, takže někdy to bylo velice těžké vše skloubit. Poslední vokální nahrávky jsme nahrávali ve Stuttgartu, v lednu jsme si rezervovali čas ve studiu na nahrání všeho nezbytného a dokončení alba.
Je zvuk nového alba odlišný od vaší předchozí práce?
Jak bylo uvedeno výše, myslíme si, že jsme vyvinuli určitý druh vlastního zvuku Sea of Sin. Směšujeme elektronické zvuky (Synths, Samples) s atmosférickou a téměř organickou náladou, včetně kytar a klavíru v některých písních. Všechny se spojují silnými melodiemi a jedinečným hlasem Franka. Na konci alba jsme použili výraz „hořký“ v písni YOU a instrumentální reprízu – tento výraz velmi dobře shrnuje náladu alba. Máme sklon tvořit melancholické písně, ale obvykle také nesou nějakou naději a pozitivní duch, to je důvod, proč si myslíme, že žánrové tituly „Indie Pop“ / „Synth Pop“ nejlépe popisují naši hudbu. Protože se vždy zaměřujeme na samotnou píseň a než na velmi inovativní techniku nebo efekty. Cítíme se blíže kapelám, jako jsou Editors, nebo New Order nikoliv danceflorovými orientovanými kapelami.
Jak si myslíte, že vaše album uspěje v okolním hudebním prostoru?
Jak jsme již sdělili, vždy se zaměřujeme na píseň. Někdy jsme konfrontováni s kritikou, že nezníme inovativně. Ano, to je pravda a jsme na to pyšní. Protože máme v sobě stále dostatek kreativního potenciálu, abychom mohli psát silné písničky Indie / Synth Pop. Opravdu nechceme změnit naši hudební DNA kvůli externí zpětné vazbě. Nakonec umělec musí věřit v sebe a my jsme si pevně přáli dělat hudbu, kterou milujeme. A to naprosto obsahuje UNBROKEN, s výsledkem jsme naprosto spokojeni. Myslíme si, že je to nejlepší práce, kterou jsme udělali v naší dlouhé historii od 90. let. Písně jako You, Love won’t wait, Unspoken Words, Floating away nebo Naked, jsou jedny z nejlepších písní, které jsme zatím napsali.
Bude album následovat koncerty?
To je pořád náš velký sen – hrát po tak dlouhé pauze opět živě. Poslední koncerty jsme hráli téměř před 20 lety ! Takže potřebujeme čas na přípravu. A co je nejdůležitější,musíme re-vitalizovat naši fanouškovskou bázi. Pak má smysl vystoupit živě. Uvidíme co přinesou další měsíce. Na závěr rozhovoru bychom chtěli dodat, že naším druhým singlem bude YOU, který bude vydán v polovině června. Včetně několika remixů jiných umělců a producentů. Plánujeme také natáčení hudebního videa pro tuto píseň a spouštíme rádio propagaci – držte nám palce v roce 2019!
